Southern Mississippi football player shot and killed

A University of Southern Mississippi football player was tragically shot and killed in Hattiesburg, Mississippi this week. Authorities reported that Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr., aged 21, was fatally shot in his car on Tuesday night at a housing complex near Highway 49. Responding officers found Daniels unresponsive at the scene.

Hattiesburg Police Department chief Hardy Sims stated that the investigation is ongoing to identify the individuals responsible for the shooting. Chief Sims expressed condolences to the Daniels family and assured that efforts are being made to bring justice for the victim and his family.

A native of Mississippi, Daniels commenced his college football journey at Ole Miss in 2021. After participating in two seasons with the Rebels, he transferred to Southern Mississippi the following year, where he quickly became a key player for the Golden Eagles.

During his junior season, Daniels showcased his talent by recording 29 tackles, 3 interceptions, and forcing 2 fumbles in 12 games.
