Keith Downie: Newcastle ‘close’ to second signing after moving on from “No.1 choice”

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie anticipates that Newcastle are edging closer to finalizing a deal for James Trafford, as discussions with Burnley persist, giving way to a potential agreement between the clubs.

During his appearance on the Loaded Mag transfer show yesterday, the North-East correspondent acknowledged that their initial bid – believed to be in the region of £15-£16 million – was rebuffed by Burnley. However, he views the ongoing negotiations as a positive sign, indicating a shared desire from both sides to reach a deal.

Interestingly, Downie disclosed that Aaron Ramsdale was initially the preferred choice, given Eddie Howe’s strong admiration for the goalkeeper and the involvement of recruitment expert Andy Howe, who had previously brought Ramsdale to Bournemouth. Nonetheless, the financial aspects, including Ramsdale’s hefty wages exceeding £100,000 per week and his expectation of regular playing time, made that transfer challenging, especially considering the presence of Nick Pope.

In his comments on Trafford and Ramsdale during the Loaded Mag’s Youtube Channel session, Downie expressed optimism about the potential acquisition of Trafford, noting that while the initial offer had been rejected, ongoing discussions suggest a mutual willingness to reach an agreement.

He emphasized how Ramsdale was the preferred option but highlighted the practical challenges associated with securing his services, making Trafford a more suitable fit given the circumstances. According to Downie, despite Trafford’s recent struggles, there is a belief within football circles that he possesses significant potential, similar to the development seen in other young talents like Anthony Gordon.
