Houston Set to Welcome All-ACC Transfer Guard on Campus Visit
The Houston Cougars are preparing to host one of the top talents currently available in the NCAA transfer portal. Following the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament—which saw the Michigan Wolverines claim the national title—the portal officially opened the next day.
Houston’s season came to an end in the Sweet 16 after a surprising loss to Illinois Fighting Illini, a team that went on to reach the Final Four. With several key players expected to depart, including Kingston Flemmings, Emmanuel Sharp, and Milos Uzan, the Cougars have already turned their attention to transfer prospects.
According to James Mueller, Houston is set to host two notable visitors in the coming days: Markus Burton and Delrecco Gillespie.
Among the two, Burton stands out as the higher-profile addition. Ranked No. 21 overall and the No. 7 point guard in the portal by 247Sports, he made a strong impression despite playing just 10 games last season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He averaged 18.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting efficiently. Though sidelined by an ankle injury for much of the year, he previously led the ACC in scoring with 21.3 points per game and earned multiple All-ACC honors, along with Rookie of the Year recognition.
Gillespie, meanwhile, brings a physical, high-energy presence that fits Houston’s style. The Kent State Golden Flashes forward led all of college basketball with 22 double-doubles this season, averaging 17.7 points and 11.3 rebounds on over 50% shooting. While he hasn’t yet been officially ranked in the portal, his production and experience have drawn widespread attention.
Houston appears focused on strengthening its backcourt and wing depth, especially with its lone 2026 recruit being five-star center Arafan Diane.
