Kent Hughes Strikes Gold: How a Bold Trade with the Oilers Brought what became Elite Level

Since stepping in as general manager alongside Jeff Gorton, Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes has completed several impressive trades.

Yet, based on recent performances, including last night’s game, it’s clear that his standout move was the trade with the Edmonton Oilers that brought Lane Hutson to Montreal.

Hutson has made quite an impact, tallying 6 points in his first 5 NHL games and adding another assist last night…

He’s genuinely outstanding, and just 20 years old!

A ‘home run’ pick-up for Kent Hughes. Let’s revisit how Hutson joined the Canadiens.

On March 21, 2022, Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens obtained the 62nd overall pick in the 2022 draft, along with William Lagesson and a 7th-round pick in 2024.

In exchange, Hughes and Jeff Gorton traded Brett Kulak to the Edmonton Oilers.

You probably know what happened next. With the 62nd pick, the Canadiens focused on a 5-foot-10, 165-pound defenseman named Lane Hutson.

Without overstating it too much, this acquisition could potentially reshape Montreal’s future.

Hutson appears to have the talent to significantly impact the franchise, and some are already drawing striking comparisons.

It’s tough to contain our excitement at the moment, and we’re working to remain balanced, but it’s clear that Hutson has the potential to be a truly exceptional player.

What a fantastic addition!
