LeBron James Aims for One Last Olympic Gold with Team USA
For what is likely his final appearance, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James hopes to lead Team USA to a gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Having previously won gold medals and being one of basketball’s most respected players, James serves as the de facto leader on a star-studded roster that includes other legends like Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry.
In a player poll conducted by The Athletic, James was voted as the team’s best overall player. Entering his unprecedented 22nd season, he continues to excel and lead, even among other veteran players.
Durant praised James’s leadership qualities, attributing his effectiveness to his infectious enthusiasm and energy for the game. Durant told the Today Show, “The more you’re around him as a teammate, you can see why he’s considered the best player to ever play.”
Durant has consistently shown great respect for James throughout their careers. Both have had moments of brilliance and victories against each other, solidifying their status as two of the greatest players of all time and certainly of their generation.
Seeing these two aging superstars unite with Team USA is a remarkable sight, especially since it is likely their final run with the national team. James has already stated he won’t compete for Team USA in 2028, and Durant will be 39 by the next Olympics in Los Angeles.
This summer, however, both remain among the world’s best players and are key to Team USA’s Olympic aspirations.
LeBron James Signs Potentially Final Contract with Lakers
LeBron James recently signed a slightly less-than-maximum two-year contract with the Lakers to help the team avoid the second apron. Although not as much as he hinted he might give up for a significant team upgrade, such an opportunity did not materialize.
James acknowledged that this contract might be the last of his career. If he opts in for the second-year player option, the contract would extend to age 41 and cover his 23rd NBA season.
