Late-Game Struggles Continue to Haunt Rockets

Clutch execution has been a major issue for the Houston Rockets, with fourth-quarter struggles costing them valuable wins.

Houston has slipped in the Western Conference standings due to inconsistency, and several of their losses have been avoidable. In multiple games this season, the Rockets have put themselves in position to win but failed to close things out.

That problem resurfaced in Monday’s loss to the Chicago Bulls. Despite erasing a 22-point deficit and taking the lead in the fourth quarter, Houston couldn’t complete the comeback. The effort required to rally made the collapse even more frustrating, especially since it still ended in defeat.

While better play earlier in games could ease late-game pressure, the reality is the Rockets have repeatedly faltered in crunch time. Even after strong stretches of play, their inability to execute late has become a recurring theme.

Fourth-Quarter Issues Persist
The Rockets have now surrendered 14 fourth-quarter leads this season, highlighting an ongoing concern under head coach Ime Udoka. Over his three seasons, the team has blown 40 leads in the final period.

Recent examples reinforce the trend. Houston lost control late against the Los Angeles Lakers in a crucial matchup, and similarly let a winnable game slip away versus the Golden State Warriors. A February collapse against the New York Knicks further exposed their struggles to generate offense late, particularly when defenses key in on stars like Kevin Durant.

There have been some bright spots, including clutch wins over the Miami Heat and New Orleans Pelicans, but those victories often required extraordinary efforts.

To improve, Houston needs more reliable late-game options, starting with Alperen Sengun. His ability to attack the paint and create opportunities for teammates could be key when shots become harder to find. The team’s inconsistent perimeter shooting only adds to the challenge.

Ultimately, many of Houston’s issues come down to correctable mistakes—turnovers, missed free throws, and poor decision-making. As one of the weaker free-throw shooting teams, those missed opportunities are especially costly late in games. The emergence of Reed Sheppard as an additional scoring and playmaking option could also provide a boost as he earns a larger role.
