Major Announcement As QB Gives His Decision For Top-25 Team On Oregon State’s Schedule
One of the most challenging games in Oregon State’s 2024 schedule took an unexpected twist on Tuesday night when UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka revealed he will redshirt for the remainder of the season.
UNLV (3-0) is enjoying its best start to a football season, having entered the coaches’ Top 25 poll for the first time in the program’s history just two weeks ago. Now, the Rebels must pursue the Mountain West championship without Sluka, who is their leading passer and rusher.

Oregon State will host UNLV on October 19 at Reser Stadium.
Matthew Sluka, a fifth-year senior, announced on social media platform X that he has chosen to redshirt this season, stating, “I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing in any additional games this season. I committed to UNLV based on certain promises made to me, which were not honored after my enrollment. After discussions, it became apparent that these commitments wouldn’t be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the program’s continued success.”
Since Sluka played in fewer than four games this season, he qualifies to use 2024 as his redshirt year.
There has been no official comment from the school or UNLV head coach Barry Odom.
Sluka, who transferred to UNLV from Holy Cross in the offseason, has rushed for 253 yards and one touchdown and has passed for 318 yards and six touchdowns. Previously, he was a standout three-year starter at Holy Cross, where he once set an NCAA Division I record for quarterbacks by rushing for 330 yards against Lafayette.
According to ESPN, Sluka has not received any NIL payments he was promised. His NIL representative, Equity Sports, reported that after transferring from Holy Cross, Sluka was verbally promised 100,000inNILcompensationbyaUNLVassistantcoach,buthehasonlyreceiveda 3,000 relocation stipend so far.
