Major Boost As Notre Dame Football Makes Significant Addition In 2026

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – While the Notre Dame football team still has four regular season games remaining in its 2024 schedule, details are emerging about the team’s 2026 matchups.

On Wednesday, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced that SMU will visit Notre Dame in South Bend in 2026. The exact date and time for the game will be confirmed later.

According to the ACC, the Mustangs will face the Fighting Irish instead of Virginia, allowing the Cavaliers to begin a two-game series with West Virginia.

SMU is joining the ACC this year and currently holds an impressive record of 8-1, including a perfect 5-0 in conference play. The Mustangs were ranked No. 13 in the season’s first College Football Playoff rankings.

As reported by fbschedules.com, SMU will be the sixth ACC opponent on Notre Dame’s 2026 schedule, joining North Carolina, Virginia, Florida State, Miami (FL), and Syracuse.

Notre Dame has a scheduling agreement with the ACC that requires the Fighting Irish to play five or six ACC teams each year.

The two schools have faced each other 13 times, with their last meeting occurring in 1989, where Notre Dame triumphed 59-6, leading the all-time series 10-3.
