Aggies Starting QB To Be ‘Game Time Decision’ For Rest of Season

The Texas A&M Aggies are facing a quarterback dilemma that will carry into their game against the Bowling Green Falcons this Saturday.

Last week, they had to start freshman Marcel Reed instead of their usual starter, Conner Weigman, who is dealing with a setback from an AC joint sprain he sustained in Week 1 against Notre Dame.

Reed delivered an impressive performance, raising questions about whether the Aggies should stick with him instead of returning to Weigman.

On Wednesday night, head coach Mike Elko addressed the situation, stating that the decision for the starting quarterback will be made on a weekly basis. “I think those who know me realize it will likely be a game-time decision for the rest of the season,” Elko shared during his weekly appearance on The Aggie Football Hour. “We have open and honest discussions internally, but those will remain private.”

Elko indicated that Weigman’s health may not be the only factor in the decision, as he has begun throwing again in practice this week and has received positive news from his latest medical evaluation.

“The imaging results were good, and we didn’t find any additional issues beyond what we’ve been managing,” Elko said in his SEC Teleconference call. “It’s an AC sprain, but everything else is intact. We’re now focused on his recovery and rehabilitation to gauge how he progresses. He was able to throw a bit today, similar to how Wednesdays typically go. We’ll assess how he’s doing later in the week before making our decision for Saturday.”

So, who will start this Saturday? It’s difficult to predict based on Elko’s statements, but Weigman remains the frontrunner when fully healthy due to his experience and proven track record.

Weigman has had impressive performances against stronger competition, including setting a freshman passing record against a top-15 Ole Miss team in 2022 and leading the Aggies to a victory over a top-5 LSU team in the same season. He was also on track for a great season in 2023 before his injury.

However, he hasn’t shown the same level of production so far in 2024, and Reed’s standout performance—completing 11 of 17 passes for 178 yards, scoring two touchdowns through the air, and rushing for 83 yards and another touchdown—has certainly put him in contention.
