Manny Machado Reflects on Tying Padres Franchise HR Record

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado hit two home runs on Friday night, tying the franchise record for career home runs with the team. In a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants, Machado recorded his 24th and 25th home runs of the season, bringing his career total with the Padres to 163, matching former Padre Nate Colbert for the most in team history.

“It’s a special accomplishment,” Manny Machado said after the game, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s an honor to be part of it… This is what I wanted—to do it in front of the home crowd. They deserve it, and doing it at home makes it even more special.”
Nate Colbert, who played for the Padres from 1969-1974, also hit 163 home runs with the team. A three-time All-Star, Colbert also played for the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Montreal Expos, and Oakland Athletics, but 163 of his 173 career home runs came during his time with the Padres, earning him a spot in the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame.
Since signing a 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres in February 2019, Machado has hit at least 20 home runs every season, except for the 2020 COVID-shortened campaign. He has surpassed 30 home runs three times, including consecutive seasons in 2022 and 2023, and is just five homers away from a third straight 30-homer season.
The 32-year-old, who previously spent seven seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and one with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has hit 337 home runs in his career. This season, Machado has posted a .274/.326/.468 slash line with 25 home runs and 89 RBIs, leading the Padres in hits, home runs, and RBIs. He is on track to break the franchise home run record with his next homer.
Machado is poised to continue adding to his total, as he signed an 11-year contract extension with the Padres in 2023, keeping him with the team through 2033.
