Marshall’s A.J. Turner And Rece Verhoff Are Named The SBC Players Of The Week And Receive Awards.

Herd’s running back accumulates a total of 207 yards, crosses the end zone 4 times; MU kicker nails 8 straight field goals.

A.J. Turner and kicker Rece Verhoff from Marshall were chosen as Players of the Week by the SBC on Monday, as per the league’s announcement.

Turner’s outstanding showing in the win over Georgia State, where he accumulated a total of 207 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns, earned him the title of SBC Offensive Player of the Week.

Verhoff also scored two field goals of 47 and 49 yards, helping the Herd win.

Marshall Football coach Charles Huff openly shared his happiness for A.J. and Rece. “Their commitment to the process is producing outcomes.”

Turner excelled, showcasing a 177-yard rushing performance, the top in the SBC for 2024 thus far. He succeeded in scoring three touchdowns on the run, one of them being an 88-yarder at the end of the game which secured the win.

The 88-yard touchdown is the 6th longest rushing touchdown in Marshall history. In addition, he scored a 23-yard touchdown by avoiding a tackle, altering his direction, and sprinting past defenders to reach the end zone.

Turner made a 30-yard touchdown reception from the backfield just before halftime to give the Herd the lead going into the break.

Currently, Turner leads the SBC in rushing yards with 717 and is the only FBS running back with more than 50 carries averaging 10 yards per carry (71 carries, 717 yards).

Verhoff’s recent kicking game triumphs persisted as he successfully kicked 47 and 49-yard field goals, leading him to be named SBC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Turner was awarded the title of SBC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance of gaining 207 all-purpose yards and scoring four touchdowns in the win against Georgia State.

In addition to the win, Verhoff also scored two field goals from distances of 47 and 49 yards that helped the Herd achieve success.

Coach Charles Huff of Marshall Football expressed his joy for A.J. and Rece. “The results are coming as a result of their commitment to the process.”

Turner had an impressive performance, rushing for 177 yards in a single game, solidifying his position as the top rusher in the SBC for the year 2024. He was able to make three touchdown runs, with one of them being an 88-yarder that secured the win in the final moments of the game.

Verhoff’s important 49-yard field goal in the final quarter stopped Georgia State’s momentum, widened Marshall’s lead to 28-20, and relieved pressure on the Herd.

Verhoff has successfully completed his last eight field goal attempts, with five made in the last two weeks, including four that were over 40 yards. This involves a 51-yard field goal he successfully kicked in his entire career against Georgia Southern.

Over the last month, Marshall has been honored with four Player of the Week accolades by the SBC, being commended for his performance in offense, defense, and special teams (with two awards for offense). Two more players added are J.J. Roberts (September 30) at defensive back and Braylon Braxton (October 7) at quarterback.

Marshall is on a break this week but is preparing for a home game against ULM at Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Nov. 2.
