‘Massive Boost’ As Georgetown Gets Another Addition In International Big Man Sensational Talent

Halaifonua is one of the top international recruits in the 2024 class

Ed Cooley and Georgetown recently secured a significant late addition to their 2024-25 roster with the commitment of Julius Halaifonua, a big man from the NBA Global Academy. Halaifonua, who stands seven feet tall and hails from New Zealand, announced his decision to join the Hoyas on Monday, as reported by 247Sports.

The highly sought-after prospect attracted attention from major programs such as Kentucky, California, Xavier, Ohio State, and North Carolina, among others.

“After a long-standing relationship with Georgetown and an impressive visit over the past few days, I’ve decided that Georgetown is the right fit for me and have committed to the university,” the four-star recruit shared with 247Sports.

Initially part of the 2025 recruiting class, Halaifonua reclassified after making a strong impression at the NBA Academy Games, where he garnered significant interest from top college programs.

“I’ve built a solid relationship with Coach Cooley and [Brian] Blaney over the past year. I’m excited about the vision for Georgetown and see a great opportunity to contribute to the program’s success right away,” Halaifonua said.

“The campus visit was fantastic, and I saw firsthand the resources available at Georgetown that support a successful program. My future teammates were very welcoming, and we all share a commitment to improving. Georgetown is also a prestigious academic institution where I feel I can thrive both academically and personally. I’m eager to officially join the team.”

Halaifonua is known for his impressive size, skill, and intelligence on the court. He has a strong build that allows him to dominate around the rim, with excellent hands and touch, and good mobility for his size.

He excels as a screener and rebounder, with a versatile scoring ability in the post and from floaters. Additionally, he has the potential to stretch the floor and is a skilled passer for a big man.

During the NBA Academy Games in July, Halaifonua averaged 16.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, shooting 59.2% from two-point range and 7-of-8 from beyond the arc.

At Georgetown, Halaifonua will join a strong 2024 freshman class that includes Thomas Sorber, Kayvan Mulready, and Caleb Williams, as well as incoming transfers Jordan Burks, Curtis Williams Jr., Malik Mack, and Micah Peavy.

Halaifonua is projected to be a four-star recruit.
