“Massive News” As Iowa State Adds Key Transfer To Young RB Room Full Of Top Potential

AMES, Iowa (KCRG) – The Iowa State football team may lack experience, but there’s significant potential within the running back group this season.

“My goal is for the room to experience a race to maturity,” said Tyler Roehl, Iowa State’s assistant head coach and running backs coach.

Senior Jaylon Jackson is the most experienced player, although the Eastern Michigan transfer has yet to see game action for the Cyclones.

“He was the only player over 20 years old until about a week or ten days ago,” Roehl noted.

True freshman Abu Sama led the group last season, averaging 7.3 yards per carry and scoring six touchdowns.

“His dynamism is impressive. He combines speed and power, which is often seen in younger players, but what he accomplished as a freshman was remarkable,” Jackson remarked about Sama.

Five of Sama’s six touchdowns came in just two games last season, and Roehl hopes to see more consistency from him.

“We’re working on precision and details with him. When he’s on his game, he’s exceptional,” Roehl stated.

The running back room also includes another sophomore, as well as several freshmen and redshirt freshmen. Jackson, having experienced multiple fall camps, has been instrumental in mentoring the younger players.

“I’m sharing what I’ve learned from my college experiences, but they also teach me since I’m still new,” Jackson explained.

“We need to improve every day and grasp our responsibilities. His leadership has been invaluable,” Roehl added.

Jackson adds a unique skill set to the mix.

“One of my strengths is making defenders miss, even in tight situations,” he said.

“He can effectively run inside or outside, and can split out for choice routes or hitches. His diverse skill set is valuable, and I appreciate the effort he’s putting in as the team rallies around him,” Roehl commented.

There is fierce competition for the starting position every day.

“If you’re not prepared to compete, you’ll be found out,” Roehl warned.

Iowa State kicks off the season on Saturday, August 31, against North Dakota.
