Miami Hurricanes newcomers discuss the FSU rivalry and prepare for a key recruiting weekend. Following a thrilling conference victory, the Hurricanes are now focused on their rivalry matchup against the Florida State Seminoles.

A significant portion of the No. 6 Miami Hurricanes’ roster consists of transfers, many of whom will experience this historic rivalry for the first time on Saturday. Despite their newcomers’ inexperience, they are well aware of the game’s significance. “You’d be surprised how many guys you think wouldn’t be familiar with it but are familiar with it,” said Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal. He emphasized the importance of educating players about the rich history of the University of Miami and its intense rivalry with Florida State.

Although rivalry games elicit excitement universally, these newcomers are particularly eager for their inaugural and likely only opportunity to face FSU as Hurricanes. Here’s what a few players shared about their feelings:

Quarterback Cam Ward, who joined Miami from Washington, said, “Just the history of it stands out. I knew about the rivalry even before I chose Miami. I’m thrilled to finally be part of one of these games. The veterans are excited too. We’re gearing up to face a strong football team on Saturday. What more could we want?”

Defensive tackle Simeon Barrow, transferring from Michigan State, added, “It’s going to be an incredible game. They’re a great team… I love rivalry games. This will be a memorable moment.”

Running back Damien Martinez, who moved from Oregon State, remarked, “You hear everywhere that this is the biggest rivalry—Miami vs. Florida State. I’m focused on preparation and improving for the game. They have strong players, and we can’t underestimate them. We’re not worried about records; we’re focused on what we need to do to execute and win.”

In addition to the rivalry game, this weekend is crucial for the Hurricanes on the recruiting front. The home matchup against the Seminoles is not just another game; it’s a key opportunity for Miami to attract talent. Alongside 21 of their 22 commitments for the 2025 recruiting class—ranked 12th nationally by the 247Sports composite—Miami will welcome numerous top recruits.

Notable attendees include:

• Five-star cornerback DJ Pickett from the Class of 2025, currently committed to LSU.
• Six other four-star prospects for 2025: Ben Hanks Jr. (cornerback from Miami Booker T. Washington, committed to Florida), linebacker TJ Alford (committed to Ohio State), defensive lineman Myron Charles (committed to Texas), defensive lineman Jarquez Carter (committed to Ohio State), cornerback Shamar Arnoux (committed to Southern Cal), linebacker Kellen Wiley, and wide receiver Malachi Toney from Plantation American Heritage.
• Over two dozen of ExcobaSports’ top recruits for the Class of 2026, including Jordan Campbell (linebacker from Miami Carol City), Calvin Russell (wide receiver from Miami Northwestern), J’Vari Flowers (cornerback), Brandon Bennett (wide receiver from American Heritage), Justice Fitzpatrick (cornerback from St. Thomas Aquinas), and Jabari Brady (wide receiver from Monarch).

After the Hurricanes’ victory against Louisville, coach Cristobal presented a game ball to Joe Echevarria in the visitors’ locker room. Echevarria was recently appointed as the University of Miami president, having served as interim president since June. Cristobal praised him, stating, “He’s an exceptional person and a real difference-maker. He has dedicated himself to the University of Miami, and I can genuinely say that I wouldn’t have come to Miami without the influence of our current president, Joe Echevarria.”

Additionally, both Echevarria and wide receiver Xavier Restrepo were inducted into the University of Miami’s Iron Arrow Society, the highest honor the university can bestow. Only about 30 individuals are admitted each year. Quarterback Cam Ward and safety Mishael Powell were also recognized with induction into the Omicron Delta Kappa honor society, which honors outstanding student leaders.
