The Gophers are now bowl-eligible and have an opportunity to extend their winning streak to five games this Saturday against Rutgers.
Since their loss to Michigan on September 28, Minnesota has gone undefeated, claiming victories over then-No. 11 Southern Cal and currently ranked No. 24 Illinois.
A key factor in their success has been a tough pass defense, which allowed only its sixth touchdown pass of the season during Saturday’s game against Illinois.
Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck spoke with reporters on Monday to reflect on the win against the Illini and look ahead to the 11 a.m. Central kickoff at Rutgers this Saturday.
Quarterback Max Brosmer threw for 213 yards and a touchdown, completing 22 of 37 passes. Darius Taylor was a standout player, rushing for 131 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and leading the team in receiving with nine catches for 58 yards. Wide receiver Elijah Spencer added six receptions for 67 yards.
This game against Rutgers also presents an opportunity for QB Athan Kaliakmanis, who started 17 games and played in 23 under Fleck at Minnesota before transferring last offseason.
Fleck tried to minimize the focus on the matchup between Kaliakmanis and his former team.
“You look at both sides of the ball, there are many players with connections. That can’t be the focus, and it won’t be the focus,” he said. “The focus is on improving this football team.”
Currently, Minnesota holds a record of 6-3, with a 4-2 mark in Big Ten play, placing them among the six teams in the conference with a winning record in conference games
