Instant Grade: Jets Re-Sign Xavier Newman in Free Agency
The New York Jets continued their busy start to free agency on Thursday with another practical roster move, bringing back veteran guard Xavier Newman.
So far this offseason, the Jets have been among the more active teams in the National Football League. Entering free agency with significant salary cap space, the team has focused on addressing needs across the roster with reliable veterans on reasonable deals rather than making a single blockbuster signing. One notable move included trading for quarterback Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders on a modest contract worth just over $3 million.
According to reporter Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the Jets are now re-signing Newman, who has spent parts of the past three seasons with the organization and provides additional depth on the offensive line.

The move reinforces continuity along the offensive line. The Jets are expected to return four starters for the 2026 season: Josh Myers, Armand Membou, Olu Fashanu, and Joe Tippmann. The team also added Dylan Parham this offseason to replace John Simpson at the other guard spot.
Bringing Newman back gives the Jets another experienced option in the interior line. Over the past three seasons, he has appeared in 21 games for New York, including four starts.
While the signing may not generate major headlines—especially since Newman appeared in only five games in 2025—it provides valuable insurance. The offensive line stayed relatively healthy last season, but if injuries arise, Newman is already familiar with the system under head coach Aaron Glenn and could step in quickly.
