Evaluation: Columbus has experienced significant changes this season, including the appointment of Don Waddell as the team’s new general manager, replacing Jarmo Kekalainen. Among Waddell’s initial actions was the dismissal of Pascal Vincent, who had been serving as the team’s head coach. Vincent had taken on the role on an interim basis following the turbulent end to Mike Babcock’s tenure.

It’s understandable that Waddell would want to have his own choice for coach in place. While it’s unfortunate for Vincent, maintaining stability proved to be a challenging task, even for the most seasoned coaches. Waddell likely determined that a fresh start was the best course of action.

The Candidate List

There are several strong candidates available for Waddell to consider. Frank Seravalli and Tyler Kuehl of the Daily Faceoff discussed a range of options, from experienced NHL coaches to dynamic new talents. They mentioned names such as Todd McLellan, Jay Woodcroft, Dean Evason, Jeff Blashill, and Gerard Gallant, who is familiar with Ohio from his previous tenure with the team from 2003 to 2007. Todd Nelson has revitalized his career with the Hershey Bears, who are the two-time defending Calder Cup champions and are currently in the finals against Coachella Valley in a rematch of last year’s championship series. Despite a challenging stint with the Edmonton Oilers, Nelson has demonstrated an ability to mentor young talent.
