Following the exciting news that Matt Newby will return as head coach of the Newcastle Eagles women’s team for the 2024/25 season, the club is thrilled to announce his first signing for the upcoming campaign.

In a nice twist of fate, his initial signing will wear #1, as Kendall Currence joins the team after graduating from Temple University, the same school that produced Eagles Hall of Famer Lynard Stewart. This will mark Kendall’s rookie professional season.

The 5’9″ guard played four years at Northeastern University from 2018 to 2022, consistently improving her performance and earning a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association All-First Team in 2022, where she averaged 15.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.

That same year, she received the Pat Summitt Most Courageous Award from the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). This award honors players, coaches, officials, or administrators who show exceptional courage, reflecting positively on the sport of amateur basketball.

Currence demonstrated remarkable resilience off the court by overcoming significant challenges, including more than a dozen surgeries for her cleft lip and palate. She also faced and triumphed over three heart defects, a heart murmur, and a bicuspid aortic valve.

Now, after concluding her collegiate career at Temple, she is excited to sign her first professional contract with the Newcastle Eagles, making her the team’s first signing for the 2024/25 season.

“I’m thrilled about the upcoming season and feel lucky to have the chance to play for the Eagles,” said Currence. “I can’t wait to compete in the league and demonstrate what my team and I can accomplish together to achieve victory.”

Coach Newby believes that Currence’s signing marks an important step forward for Newcastle’s premier women’s basketball program.

“Kendall is a highly skilled scorer on the perimeter, and I’m confident she will contribute significantly when she takes the court in an Eagles jersey,” added head coach Newby.

“She brings an exciting skill set and style of play that I believe aligns well with European basketball. She’s a player of high character and an excellent role model for younger women in our program.

“Having graduated from two prestigious NCAA Division I schools, Northeastern and Temple, I’m confident she will be crucial to our development as a team and a tremendous asset to our community.”

This is just the beginning, as pre-season preparations are progressing rapidly. All details will be revealed at ‘The Launch’ event at the Vertu Motors Arena on Friday, September 6, where both the women’s and men’s 2024/25 rosters will be unveiled.
