4 Candidates to Watch in the Ball State Football Head Coach Search
Amid a 3-7 season, Ball State decided to part ways with head coach Mike Neu earlier this week.
“Coach Neu has dedicated himself to the Ball State football program,” said Athletic Director Beth Goetz. “I commend him for his professionalism and the positive team culture he built. His efforts have had a lasting impact on the lives of many young men, and he has represented the Ball State brand with integrity and class. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Neu, a former Ball State quarterback, spent eight seasons at the helm, compiling a 40-63 record. Now, with the head coach position open, here are several candidates who could be in consideration for the role:
Tyler Stockton – Boise State Co-Defensive Coordinator/Safeties Coach
Tyler Stockton, a former defensive lineman at Notre Dame, spent five years (2019-2023) as an assistant at Ball State before moving to Boise State as co-Defensive Coordinator. Having quickly risen through the coaching ranks, Stockton has strong ties to the Ball State program and could bring familiarity and continuity to the role.
Joey Lynch – Texas A&M Assistant Coach
Joey Lynch, a former Ball State quarterback and Indianapolis native, has deep connections to his alma mater, having spent 11 seasons on the coaching staff from 2009 to 2019. Lynch also brings Power Five experience, having worked at Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, making him a well-rounded candidate with both local ties and top-level experience.
Jay Bateman – Texas A&M Defensive Coordinator
Another Texas A&M assistant with Ball State ties is Jay Bateman, who served as the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator from 2011-2013. After leaving Ball State, Bateman coached at North Carolina, Florida, and is now the defensive coordinator at Texas A&M. His experience at multiple Power Five schools, combined with his history with the Ball State program, makes him a strong contender.
Mike Uremovich – Butler Head Coach
The most high-profile candidate is Mike Uremovich, the current head coach at Butler. Uremovich, who previously served as an offensive coordinator at Northern Illinois and Temple, has posted an impressive 17-8 record over his three seasons at Butler. His success at the FCS level could make him a strong candidate for a jump to FBS football at Ball State.
