Notre Dame to Get Final Spring Visit With Key 5-Star Target
Notre Dame football is approaching a crucial moment this spring as it looks to strengthen its 2027 recruiting class, which is already shaping up to be another strong group under head coach Marcus Freeman. With several top prospects scheduled to visit South Bend in the coming months, this stretch will play a major role in determining how successful the class ultimately becomes.
One of the most important defensive targets for the Irish is highly touted defensive lineman Marcus Fakatou from Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth, California. Originally offered by Notre Dame as a 2028 prospect, Fakatou quickly became a top priority after reclassifying to the 2027 class. Since then, Freeman and his staff have worked to position themselves as serious contenders.
Notre Dame and Ohio State are currently viewed as leading programs in his recruitment, but Fakatou has lined up a busy visit schedule this spring. His tour includes stops at Georgia (March 20), Oregon (March 31), Miami (April 4), Texas (April 9), Penn State (April 14), Michigan (April 18), and finally Notre Dame on April 25. Having the last visit before the official visit season could give the Irish an important advantage.
For Notre Dame to stay ahead in this recruitment, it will need to make a strong impression during that final visit. Ending the spring on a high note could be key for Freeman and his staff as they try to secure his commitment.
Marcus Fakatou’s Recruiting Profile
Fakatou is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in his class. In early 2028 rankings by 247Sports, he was listed as the No. 3 overall player, the top defensive lineman, and the best player in California. Even after moving into the 2027 class, he remains an elite recruit, earning five-star status and ranking among the top players nationally at his position.
His recruitment has attracted attention from nearly every major program in the country, including Notre Dame, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, LSU, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC, Penn State, Miami, Auburn, Nebraska, SMU, BYU, Arizona State, Missouri, Utah, Washington, Colorado, Minnesota, Arizona, Syracuse, and Cal.
On the field, Fakatou has already proven highly productive. As a freshman in 2024, he recorded 28 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and five sacks. He followed that up with an even stronger 2025 season, finishing with 69 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, seven sacks, 14 quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles, and eight blocked kicks. His size, athleticism, and versatility make him a standout defensive talent.
