The Ohio State Buckeyes have revealed their starting quarterback for the 2024 season. They will kick off the season at home against Akron on August 31st at 3:30 PM. Head Coach Ryan Day announced on Thursday that Will Howard, a transfer from Kansas State, will take on the starting quarterback role.
Ohio State Buckeyes Quarterback Will Howard
Will Howard played for the Kansas State Wildcats, he helped them to a Big 12 title two seasons ago. He decided to transfer to Ohio State for the 2024 season in January. Howard has been competing for the starting QB1 job in preseason with Devin Brown. Head Coach Day said,
“We’re really excited about Will being the starter,” Day said. “He has really taken command of the offense. You feel him in the huddle, you feel his experience. He did a really good job of changing his body in the offseason, so he’s become a threat, both with his legs and with his arm. The more he understands what he’s doing out there … he’s really executing very well.”
Before transferring to Ohio state, Howard set a Kansas state record with 48 career touchdown passes and tied the team’s single-season mark with 24 touchdown passes last fall. He has 5,786 career passing yards and has accounted for 67 total touchdowns.
Day reported that Devin Brown will be the backup quarterback to Howard. Day explained that Howard deserved it and earned the starting position. First-year offensive coordinator Chip Kelly said, “Will has earned it…we obviously grade everything and Will graded out the highest.”
Even Defensive Coordinator Jim Knowles is impressed with the Kansas transfer.
“He’s making all the throws,” Knowles said. “He’s got great vision and arm strength. We’ve got great receivers, and he’s putting the ball in places where only the receiver can catch it. It’s not just the arm strength. He’s making the pinpoint passes.”
Ohio State Buckeyes Looking Toward a Championship
The Ohio State Buckeyes are one of the most popular college football teams in the country with most of their games nationally televised. The Buckeyes have been in the College Football Playoff in recent years but the last time Ohio State pulled the trigger and won a title was in 2014-15 against Oregon.
The Buckeyes did play in the National Championship game against Alabama in 2020-21 and it was a disappointing showing for the Buckeyes, losing 52-24.
According to the AP (Associated Press), the Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked second in the Top 25. The Buckeyes are hoping to have another successful season under new transfer quarterback Will Howard. Ohio State is only playing four preseason-ranked teams this year: Iowa, Penn State, Oregon, and Michigan. They should have a fairly easy schedule and a winning record.
