Sluggish Seminoles shocked by Georgia Tech, 24-21 in Ireland

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – In a tumultuous Week 0 matchup, No. 10 Florida State faced Georgia Tech, ultimately suffering a heartbreaking 24-21 loss in Dublin, Ireland.

The Seminoles (0-1, 0-1 ACC) kicked off the scoring with a touchdown pass from DJ Uiagalelei to Lawrence Toafili, followed by a two-point conversion from Brian Courtney, giving them an early 8-0 lead.

Georgia Tech (1-0, 1-0 ACC) responded with backup quarterback Zach Pyron scoring on a short run during their first drive, narrowing the score to 8-7.

The Yellow Jackets added another touchdown in the first quarter with a run from Jamal Haynes. In between, Ryan Fitzgerald made two field goals over 50 yards, leveling the score at 14-14 by halftime, with Fitzgerald’s second coming from an impressive 59 yards, marking the second longest in program history.

After halftime, both teams exchanged punts before each mounted lengthy touchdown drives, again tying the game at 21. In the final moments, Georgia Tech moved into field goal range, allowing Aidan Birr to kick a 46-yard field goal that sealed the Seminoles’ defeat.

Florida State will seek to bounce back and secure its first win of the season on Labor Day Monday, hosting Boston College at Doak Campbell Stadium.
