LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Not long ago, Louisville appeared to be rounding into form at the perfect time. Now, as the regular season winds down, the Cardinals seem to be losing momentum.

Facing a tough Monday night road test against North Carolina, Louisville once again fell short against a ranked opponent away from home, dropping a 77–74 decision at the Dean Dome.

Kelsey credited the Tar Heels afterward, pointing to four key metrics his staff emphasizes: effective field goal percentage, free throw rate, rebounding percentage, and turnover rate. He noted that North Carolina clearly won two of those four areas, which proved decisive.

Although Louisville trailed by just one at halftime, the game quickly shifted early in the second half as the Tar Heels built a 16-point advantage. The Cardinals battled back and trimmed the deficit to a single possession in the final minute, but they were unable to complete the comeback.

North Carolina shot an efficient 53.6 percent from the field despite missing standout forward Caleb Wilson. Louisville, meanwhile, connected on just 38.8 percent of its shots. Mikel Brown Jr. led the Cardinals with 24 points, while Ryan Conwell added 23. For the Tar Heels, Seth Trimble poured in a game-high 30 points.

The loss extended Louisville’s skid to 13 consecutive road defeats against AP-ranked teams, including five under Kelsey in his second season at the helm. It also dropped the Cardinals to 0–7 against Quad 1A opponents this year.

Kelsey did find some encouragement in his team’s resilience, highlighting their fight after falling behind by 16. With several days off before their next game on Saturday, he emphasized the need to review film, correct schematic issues, and — most importantly — improve the team’s response when adversity strikes, particularly in hostile road environments.
