The Colorado Avalanche chose to defer the excitement of the NHL Draft on Friday evening by opting to trade out of the first round. In a significant move, they executed the first trade with the newly established Utah Hockey Club, sending their 24th overall pick to their regional neighbors. In return, the Avalanche received picks 38 and 71 in this year’s draft, along with the New York Rangers’ second-round pick in 2025, previously acquired when the Rangers were still the Arizona Coyotes.

The Avalanche have not utilized a second-round pick since their selection of Sean Behrens in 2021, preferring instead to leverage these assets in trades for established NHL players. General manager Chris MacFarland explained that the decision to move down in the draft was seen as an opportunity to accumulate more resources. Despite not picking until 38th overall, which is the sixth pick in the second round, the Avalanche remain confident that they can secure a player they value highly.
