Rams Closing In on Blockbuster Trade for Chiefs Star Trent McDuffie
Help in the secondary may soon arrive for the Los Angeles Rams.
According to Ian Rapoport, Los Angeles is heavily engaged in discussions with the Kansas City Chiefs about acquiring standout cornerback Trent McDuffie.
The proposed deal would reportedly send the Rams’ No. 29 overall first-round pick, along with a fifth-rounder, a sixth-rounder, and a 2027 third-round selection, to Kansas City in exchange for the two-time Super Bowl champion. Rapoport also indicated that the move is expected to come with a new long-term contract for the 25-year-old defender.
A move to Los Angeles would reunite McDuffie with Jimmy Lake, now the Rams’ defensive backs coach, who previously coached him at Washington and played a key role in his development at the college level.
It would also fulfill a personal wish McDuffie shared in 2025. While speaking at an event for his T22 McDuffie Foundation, the California native mentioned that if he ever suited up for another franchise, it would be the Rams so his family could attend every home game.
Drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, McDuffie quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier young defensive backs. After starting 11 games as a rookie, he appeared in 16 contests during his second season and earned All-Pro recognition. Over four seasons with Kansas City, he played in 56 games, tallying 246 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 34 pass deflections, and three interceptions.
The Rams stand to gain significantly from adding a player of McDuffie’s caliber. Their secondary was widely viewed as a weak spot in 2025, and with Cobie Durant headed toward free agency, cornerback has been a clear offseason priority.
If the trade is finalized, Los Angeles would retain just one first-round selection in April’s NFL Draft — the No. 13 overall pick.
