Gabby Deery’s Career High Propels Her into the Record Books

In a thrilling match at Xfinity Pavilion, the University of Iowa volleyball team emerged victorious against Maryland, securing a hard-fought win in five sets. This victory marked a significant milestone for the Hawkeyes, bringing their season record to 8-6 and improving their conference standing to 2-0 for the first time since 2008. The team has shown remarkable resilience this season, boasting a perfect 4-0 record in five-set matches, having previously triumphed over Delaware, Rutgers, and South Dakota.

Sophomore Gabby Deery was a standout performer in the match, achieving a personal best with 20 kills and maintaining an impressive hitting percentage of .410. Her contributions were critical to the team’s success. Senior Michelle Urquhart also shone brightly, not only delivering 16 kills but also recording a double-double with 16 digs. Freshman Malu Garcia added to the offensive firepower with 11 kills, showcasing her skills and potential on the court. Additionally, freshman Jenna Meitzler matched her career high with five kills while also providing a strong all-around performance with 47 assists, five blocks, and nine digs. Senior Gracie Gibson tied her personal best by contributing eight blocks and six kills with a hitting percentage of .417.

Head coach Jim Barnes praised the team’s determination and grit, emphasizing the importance of their collective effort in securing the win on the road. He acknowledged the significant performances from Deery and Urquhart, while also highlighting Joy’s relentless defensive efforts. Coach Barnes noted that while the team has room for improvement, their commitment to finding ways to win and enhance their performance is evident. The Hawkeyes are clearly focused on building on this success as they continue through the season.
