Report: South Dakota State announces new football public address announcer

Starting September 7, a new voice will take the microphone at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Ryan Howlett, who has a 30-year history with South Dakota State University, has been appointed as the public address announcer for Jackrabbit football games.

“SDSU feels like home, and I’m thrilled to return as part of the team,” said Howlett, a Watertown native and 1998 graduate. He previously held positions with the SDSU Alumni Association (1998-2003) and the SDSU Foundation (2007-12), and he currently serves as the CEO of Friends of SDPB, the fundraising branch of South Dakota Public Broadcasting, based in Sioux Falls.

Howlett first got a taste of public addressing for Jackrabbit Athletics while at the Alumni Association. Encouraged by star volleyball player Roxie Rath, who was an intern there, he pursued the open PA announcer position after the previous announcer left. Rath was impressed with Howlett’s announcing skills when introducing her to the staff.

“It was a fantastic experience that made a dream come true,” Howlett reflected on announcing volleyball from 1998 to 2003. He later extended his duties to wrestling and occasionally basketball games as well.

This fall, he will continue that dream every Saturday in front of fans in the Jackrabbits’ 19,340-seat stadium, taking over from Tom Manzer, who held the position for 44 years.

“Tom has been a close friend and mentor,” Howlett remarked, referencing Manzer’s involvement with the Friends of SDPB board. “I’m excited to follow in his footsteps.”

While Howlett will bring his own style to the gameday experience, some traditions will stay intact, particularly the signature introduction for the Pride of the Dakotas marching band performances.

“Dr. (Kevin) Kessler has said ‘The Pride is Back’ will remain a staple, and we are working on how that will sound,” Howlett explained.

As he prepares for his debut, Howlett is focused on ensuring that the Jackrabbits retain their home-field advantage.

“This role is about creating an enjoyable experience for both fans and players,” he said. “I’m eager to continue a tradition of champions. Let’s win another title!”
