Reports: Auburn Football Head Coach Hugh Freeze Updates The Status Of Several Tigers Amid Heavy Uncertainties

Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze provides an update on the team’s status as the season approaches. With August coming to a close, the Tigers are set to begin their second season under Freeze this Saturday when they take on Alabama A&M at 6:30 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

One of Freeze’s main focuses during fall camp has been ensuring player health and preventing significant injuries, particularly in light of Texas running back Christian Clark’s ACL tear that sidelined him for the season.

As for the Tigers’ situation leading up to the 2024 season, they have avoided serious injuries, although a few players have had minor issues. Freeze mentioned that cornerback Keionte Scott and linebacker Austin Keys are both “probably” ready to play this weekend, though their participation will depend on their performance in practice.

“Our medical staff thinks Austin is likely to play,” Freeze said, according to Auburn Rivals. “He’ll need to show something in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday for us to feel confident about him. That’s the same assessment for both him and Keionte.”

Transfer wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith had a minor ankle issue earlier in camp but returned to practice last week and is anticipated to start on Saturday.

Kicker Alex McPherson is improving following a significant gastrointestinal issue and is gaining weight, but he is not expected to be ready for this weekend’s game. True freshman Towns McGough, who impressed during the A-Day game, is likely to start in his place.

“Alex is feeling much better, but I don’t think he’ll be ready to play yet,” Freeze stated. “Towns has had a solid week of practice and is prepared. Alex did kick a little last Thursday, but I don’t expect him to be ready this Saturday.”
