REPORTS: Damon Stoudamire Turns Former Hornet “SUPERSTAR” Into A Yellow Jacket At Tech

Duncan Powell, a 6-8 forward who competed for Sacramento State last season, has committed to join the men’s basketball program at Georgia Tech, as announced by head coach Damon Stoudamire. Powell will be eligible to play for two seasons with the Yellow Jackets.

Once considered a top-100 high school prospect, Powell emerged as the leading scorer (averaging 12.1 points per game) and rebounder (with 7.0 per game) for the Hornets in the previous season. His rebounding total ranked sixth in the Big Sky Conference, and he maintained a 49 percent field goal success rate. Powell achieved double-digit scoring in 21 games and secured double-digit rebounds in 10 games, including five double-doubles. Notably, he recorded the second triple-double in the Hornets’ Division I history, tallying 13 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists against Bethesda.

Stoudamire commented, “Duncan is a versatile player who will enhance our overall depth. We are excited to welcome him to our team.”

In the class of 2021, ESPN ranked Powell as the No. 84 prospect in the nation, recognizing his accomplishments at DeSoto High School, where he averaged 21.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists as a junior before missing his senior year due to injury. Powell initially enrolled at North Carolina A&T, where he became the most highly rated prospect ever signed by the school. After redshirting in the 2021-22 season, he participated in 30 games for the Aggies in 2022-23, averaging 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds in 22.5 minutes per game.

Powell is the fourth transfer to make a commitment to the Yellow Jackets, joining guard Javian McCollum from Oklahoma (6-2), center Ryan Mutombo from Georgetown (7-2), and wing Luke O’Brien from Colorado (6-8). Additionally, Georgia Tech has assembled a recruiting class that has been ranked as the 14th-best in the nation, featuring high school prospects Cole Kirouac (6-11 center), Jaeden Mustaf (6-4 guard), Doryan Onwuchekwa (6-11 center), and Darrion Sutton (6-8 forward).
