Auburn Tigers’ defensive coordinator DJ Durkin aims to introduce a more dynamic and aggressive defense this season. While it’s not just about going all out recklessly, Durkin is known for toughening up opposing offensive lines.

Head coach Hugh Freeze has often praised the innovative ideas that his new assistants, including Durkin, have brought since joining the team.

When Freeze brought Durkin on board, he recognized a coaching philosophy similar to his own. “During our interview, what impressed me the most was how DJ coaches defense in a way that aligns with how I believe offense should be taught,” Freeze noted, emphasizing the variety of defensive looks while maintaining clear communication.

Durkin’s strategy isn’t solely focused on a new defensive mindset; it’s also about effectively conveying complex defensive concepts that can confuse opponents. “He provides numerous looks that complicate things for the offensive line and the quarterback,” Freeze explained. He believes Durkin’s understanding of how to keep the defense unpredictable is impressive, similar to his own offensive style.

Their practice sessions have been dedicated to fine-tuning these defensive strategies, but ultimately, success hinges on repetition and mastering fundamental skills like tackling.

Continuing to work on the practice field is key, as Freeze emphasizes that coaching both sides of the ball should be clear and straightforward for effective results. “Every team has its own challenges, but I’m happy with the team dynamic and their competitive spirit,” he said.

This cohesive approach is particularly wise, especially with the talented young players Auburn will have in 2024. Freeze has secured a top-10 recruiting class for 2024 and currently boasts a top-5 class for 2025, packed with defensive linemen. His first partial class in 2023 included standout commitment Keldric Faulk.

Among last year’s recruits is 5-star Amaris Williams, and Freeze’s 2025 class features impressive pressure players like Jared Smith, Malik Autry, and Jakaleb Faulk.
