Reports: Ex-Michigan staffer gets coaching job at Detroit high school
(CBS DETROIT) – Connor Stalions, the former low-level recruiter at the University of Michigan implicated in the sign-stealing scandal, has secured a new role as an assistant coach at Mumford High School in Detroit.
Mumford Principal Damon Pitt confirmed Stalions’ appointment to CBS News Detroit.
Stalions will be joining the coaching staff led by Head Coach William McMichael, who was recently hired by Mumford after serving as an assistant coach at Belleville.
“Connor was someone Coach McMichael believed would be a crucial addition to developing our football program,” Pitt stated. “We wanted to prioritize the football aspect, and since joining, Connor has been doing outstanding work.”
Pitt noted that Stalions has been with Mumford’s program since early summer.
“I’ve observed his dedication, whether working with a small group of 10 kids or a larger group of 30,” Pitt added. “That consistency is what I look for in any coach, and he’s been excellent in that regard.”
According to a statement from the Detroit Public Schools Community District, Stalions is serving as a volunteer.
“Assistant coaches are hired as contractors or volunteers, not full-time employees of the District, by head coaches and school principals,” a district spokesperson explained.
Stalions was part of Head Coach Jim Harbaugh’s staff until he resigned in November following accusations of purchasing tickets and sending individuals to games involving future opponents to digitally record team signals, a practice prohibited by NCAA rules.
After the scandal, Stalions was placed on leave and eventually resigned.
He is set to discuss his side of the sign-stealing controversy in the upcoming fourth season of “Untold,” premiering on Netflix on August 27.
Harbaugh has denied any knowledge of the alleged scheme and left the University of Michigan to join the Los Angeles Chargers shortly after leading the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Mumford High School will kick off its 2024 season at home against Redford Thurston on August 29.
