Reports: Former ASU Sun Devil and 49ers wide receiver shot during attempted robbery in San Francisco

The 49ers announced Sunday that Pearsall had been released from the hospital

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Mayor London Breed confirmed on Saturday that Ricky Pearsall, a former ASU Sun Devil and first-round draft pick for the San Francisco 49ers, was shot during a robbery attempt in the city.

The shooting occurred just before 4 p.m. near Union Square in Downtown San Francisco.

The San Francisco Police Department reported that a man tried to rob Pearsall, leading to a physical confrontation in which both Pearsall and the suspect were shot. They were both transported to a hospital for assessment.

Pearsall sustained a chest wound and was admitted in serious but stable condition, as stated by the San Francisco 49ers. On Sunday, the team announced that Pearsall has been released from the hospital and is on the road to recovery.

Breed stated that police responded quickly to the scene, and the shooter was apprehended. At this time, the individual has only been identified as a 17-year-old.

Authorities indicated that there is currently no evidence suggesting the robbery was motivated by Pearsall’s status as a football player.

San Francisco Police Chief William Scott released a statement about the incident:

“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the shooting of 49ers player Ricky Pearsall today in Union Square. Such violence is unacceptable in our city and will not be tolerated. My thoughts are with Mr. Pearsall and his family, and I wish him a swift recovery.

I’m grateful that our dedicated officers made a prompt arrest in this case, and we will do everything in our power to ensure justice is achieved.”
