It was announced yesterday that Georgia Tech will be featuring something special with their helmets this weekend.

This matchup will have many factors at play, but I believe the outcome may hinge on the battle between Georgia Tech’s defensive line and Florida State’s offensive line. Georgia Tech struggled with one of the worst defenses in the nation last season, particularly in stopping the run, while Mike Norvell’s teams are typically strong in that area. The Seminoles boast a deep running back corps and a solid offensive line, which could define their offensive strategy this year.

Brent Key revamped the defensive staff during the offseason, focusing on improvements through the transfer portal. He has praised the defensive line throughout fall camp, suggesting they should be better coached this season. Tyler Santucci, who previously served as the defensive coordinator at Duke, is now in charge of Georgia Tech’s defense. He faced Florida State last year, when the Seminoles amassed 420 yards of total offense.

During his one season at Duke in 2023, Santucci led the ACC with the top-ranked scoring defense, allowing just 19.0 points per game, which placed them 16th nationally. The Blue Devils were also among the top 50 in various defensive categories, including rushing and passing defense. They allowed only 10 points in two victories against teams that finished in the top 25: No. 20 Clemson (28-7) and No. 21 NC State (24-3), and ended the season with an 8-5 record following a 17-10 win over Troy in the Birmingham Bowl.

If Florida State can run the ball effectively, their passing game may not even be a factor. Conversely, if Georgia Tech can succeed on early downs and put Uigalelei in predictable passing situations, they have a chance to win the game.

Georgia Tech vs. Florida State kicks off tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
