Maryland and Georgetown will renew their men’s basketball rivalry with a four-game series starting in 2025, as announced on Tuesday. Their last game was in the 2016-17 season, where Maryland triumphed 75-71. The two schools, separated by just 23 miles, played annually from 1935 to 1980 but have not met regularly in over 30 years.

The series will kick off at Maryland’s Xfinity Center in the 2025-26 season, followed by a game at Georgetown the next year, then back to Maryland in 2027, and finally at Georgetown in 2028.

Historic animosity between Maryland coach Lefty Driesell and former Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr. had long stalled the rivalry. Despite their mutual respect later in life, some bitterness remained.

Driesell’s loss at Georgetown in 1998, which would have been his 700th career win, was a memorable episode. Meanwhile, John Thompson III’s decision to play Maryland almost a decade ago didn’t thrill his father, who humorously disapproved in 2015.

Next season, Georgetown, led by Ed Cooley, will feature veteran Jayden Epps and standout transfer Micah Peavy. Maryland, under Kevin Willard, will rely on Julian Reese, brother of WNBA star Angel Reese.
