The idea of Anthony Gordon transferring to Liverpool has been downplayed by Newcastle United, but it still raised concerns among some of the black and white supporters earlier this summer.

The England international, who has been a Liverpool fan since childhood, was rumored to be heading to Anfield as the Magpies worked to meet the Premier League’s PSR deadline. The departures of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson helped alleviate the worry of losing a key player.

However, the speculation about Gordon joining his boyhood club has lingered. It’s clear that losing Gordon this summer would have been a significant setback for Newcastle.

Eddie Howe has emphasized how crucial Anthony Gordon is for Newcastle, both for this season and in the future. Therefore, when news broke in the last 24 hours about Liverpool’s interest in Italian international Federico Chiesa, fans of the Magpies likely breathed a sigh of relief.

Newcastle has been linked with a move for the Juventus winger throughout the summer, and at a reported price of just £15 million, it would have posed both risks and rewards. While Chiesa hasn’t been the same since his injury after the Euro 2020 triumph, many believe he could excel under Howe at St. James’ Park, bringing valuable experience from top-level play.

However, if given the choice to sign Chiesa at the expense of losing Gordon, most would choose to keep the Newcastle winger without hesitation. Bringing in the Juventus forward would almost certainly diminish any chances of retaining Gordon this summer, as Arne Slot’s team is already well-equipped in attack.
