Reports: Top Prospect tallying 65 yards, leading rusher in Lamar inter-squad scrimmage

BEAUMONT, Texas – Aiden McCown, a redshirt freshman from Rusk High School, led the Lamar University Cardinals in rushing during Saturday’s inter-squad scrimmage at Provost Umphrey Stadium with 65 yards.

McCown is one of five quarterbacks on the Cardinal roster. The scrimmage, lasting over 120 minutes, featured all Lamar quarterbacks, with Robert Coleman and Jakolby Longino competing for the starting position. Together, the quarterbacks completed 36 of 61 passes for 469 yards and three touchdowns. Longino threw two touchdown passes, while Coleman added one.

Besides McCown, the Lamar roster includes three local former high school stars. Senior Lane Gilchrest, also from Rusk, serves as the team’s long snapper and played in all 11 games last season. Jacksonville High School graduate Koda Canady plays linebacker and participated in six games last year, recording 11 tackles (four solo) and one pass breakup. Sophomore offensive lineman Kaden Verden, a former Bullard Panther, played in a reserve role for nine games in his freshman season.

Lamar finished the 2023 season with a 6-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Southland Conference play. The Cardinals will kick off their season at 7 p.m. on August 31 against Texas State in San Marcos. Their home opener is set for 6 p.m. the following week when Mississippi Valley State visits the Golden Triangle area.
