The Texas Rangers will pay tribute to former shortstop Elvis Andrus during their Friday game against the Los Angeles Angels at Globe Life Field. Andrus is expected to announce his retirement before the game and will also throw out the first pitch. He played for the Rangers from 2009 to 2020, achieving a batting average of .269 with 102 home runs, 775 RBIs, and 347 stolen bases over 2,059 games.
Additionally, he had stints with the Oakland A’s (2021-22) and Chicago White Sox (2022-23) before being released by the Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training in March, without joining another team. Angels manager Ron Washington, who managed Andrus in Texas, along with former teammate Michael Young, will join him for a press conference at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
Following the press conference, Andrus and Young will take part in a ceremonial first pitch before the game. Andrus was acquired from Atlanta in July 2007 and made his MLB debut on opening day in 2009, finishing his time with the Rangers with a .274/.330/.372 batting line, 76 homers, and 636 RBIs across 1,652 games through the 2020 season. He holds the Rangers’ record for 305 stolen bases and ranks second in games played, at-bats (6,366), and triples (48), while sitting third in runs (893) and hits (1,743).
A two-time AL All-Star (2010 and 2012), Andrus was named the Rangers’ Rookie of the Year in 2009 and their Player of the Year in 2017, setting career highs with 100 runs, 191 hits, 44 doubles, 20 home runs, and 88 RBIs. He played exclusively at shortstop for Texas and appeared in 145 or more games in ten out of eleven seasons from 2009 to 2019.
