The Carolina Panthers waived Harrison Mevis leaving him jobless entering the 2024 season
With the NFL season just weeks away and preseason games underway, teams are finalizing their rosters. After four seasons at the University of Missouri, Harrison Mevis signed as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers this offseason. However, on Sunday, the Panthers chose to go with the experienced Eddy Piñeiro and subsequently waived Mevis.
While at Mizzou, Mevis earned the nickname “The Thiccer Kicker” due to his distinctive size for the position, standing 5-foot-11 and weighing approximately 243 pounds. Even though he did not win the kicking competition with the Panthers, there’s still a chance Mevis could find a new opportunity this season.

During his time at Missouri, Mevis proved to be a dependable kicker. In his senior year, he successfully converted 24 out of 30 field goals, giving him an 80% success rate. Despite missing six attempts, he often faced high-pressure situations, which could help him in his future professional career.
Mevis was particularly strong with long-distance kicks, achieving a solid 13-for-18 success rate on field goals over 50 yards. His standout moment occurred in his senior season when he hit a 61-yard game-winning field goal against Kansas State.

Mevis is likely to find opportunities as the season progresses, as teams consistently seek to enhance their kicking game. Many teams face challenges with consistency and frequently make mid-season changes; in 2023 alone, 39 different kickers recorded statistics.
Even if he doesn’t land an NFL opportunity right away, there are numerous ways for him to gain experience. We’re seeing more kickers transition from lower-level leagues, such as Brandon Aubrey of the Dallas Cowboys, who became one of the league’s top kickers last season after playing in the USFL with the Birmingham Stallions. With the recent rise of the UFL, that could present another chance for Mevis in the near future.
