The Carolina Panthers reported that starting quarterback Andy Dalton and his family were involved in a car accident on Tuesday in Charlotte. Fortunately, none of them required transportation by emergency medical services. The team announced that Dalton is currently being evaluated by their medical personnel. He was traveling with his wife, three children, and their dog, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The Panthers will release additional updates as they become available, but at this time, that’s all the information provided.

Dalton, 36, has been the Panthers’ starter for the last five games after former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young was benched. He led the team to their first win of the season against the Las Vegas Raiders and holds a record of 1-4 overall. In that span, he has thrown for 989 yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Dalton is a three-time Pro Bowler, with his last selection in 2016 while with the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent the first nine years of his career in Cincinnati, where he recorded a 70-61-2 record as a starter, accumulating 31,594 yards, 204 touchdowns, and 118 interceptions. After leaving Cincinnati, Dalton has played with multiple teams, including the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, the Chicago Bears in 2021, the New Orleans Saints in 2022, and now with the Panthers in 2023 and 2024.

With Young benched, Dalton has another opportunity to start. Panthers head coach Dave Canales indicated that there are currently no plans to return Young to the starting role. When asked about the necessity of playing Young for evaluation, Canales stated, “Right now we’re focused on the Broncos. Andy (Dalton) will be starting this week, and that’s where our attention is.” Canales has emphasized that the team believes Dalton gives them the best chance to win, keeping him as the starter for now.

The Panthers will continue to provide updates on Dalton’s condition, but the expectation is that he and his family are not facing serious injuries. The Panthers are set to face the Denver Broncos this Sunday for their Week 8 matchup.
