Steelers Cut Veteran Tight End After One Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers made another roster move this week as they prepare for free agency, releasing veteran tight end Jonnu Smith before the final year of his contract.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the move clears about $7 million in salary cap space for Pittsburgh. With the release, Smith will enter free agency as an unrestricted free agent.

Smith joined the Steelers last offseason in a trade with the Miami Dolphins that also involved star defender Jalen Ramsey and sent Minkah Fitzpatrick the other way. His arrival was expected to give him a meaningful role in the offense, especially since he had prior experience playing under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith during their time with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.

However, Smith never fully found his rhythm in Pittsburgh. He finished the season with 38 catches for 222 yards and two touchdowns while playing just over half of the team’s offensive snaps.

Following the move, the Steelers’ tight end group is now led by Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. Washington ended last season on injured reserve due to a broken arm, leaving limited depth at the position.

There could be additional changes ahead. Connor Heyward is also set to hit free agency, which could push Pittsburgh to add another tight end. Meanwhile, Freiermuth—who signed a four-year, $48 million extension before the 2024 season—has reportedly attracted trade interest from several teams, though the Steelers have indicated they are not willing to move him.

Despite seeing a career-low 51% snap share in 2025, Freiermuth still posted 486 receiving yards and four touchdowns. His involvement in the offense could grow with Mike McCarthy now running the offense.

Washington also showed development as a pass catcher, recording 31 receptions for 364 yards and a touchdown. The 6-foot-7 tight end, already known for his elite blocking, is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is viewed as a potential long-term piece for Pittsburgh.

While a major addition at tight end seems unlikely, the Steelers could still add depth through free agency, the 2026 NFL Draft, or a smaller trade.
