Texas A&M football faces the crucial matchup of the weekend—and potentially the entire year—on Saturday night, as they host the LSU Tigers. Both teams enter the game unbeaten in the conference.

LSU has managed this record with an offense that can be explosive but sometimes struggles with consistency. The Tigers initially had a tough time against South Carolina until they found their rhythm just before halftime. Their performance versus UCLA was lackluster, and they appeared to be going through the motions against Arkansas.

However, when LSU’s offense clicks, it can be impressive. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, despite his tendency to throw interceptions, has a strong arm, and the Tigers boast a talented group of tall, athletic receivers, led by Kyren Lacy.

Freshman sensation Caden Durham from Duncanville has emerged as a standout running back, playing a key role in the Tigers’ victory over the Gamecocks, aided by questionable officiating and an injury to LaNorris Sellers.

The much-criticized LSU defense has shown improvement recently. After four games of poor performance, they have significantly reduced the number of explosive plays allowed, leading to better results overall.

This all combines to create a team, like the Aggies, that is on a significant winning streak—appropriate for two squads that have each won their last six games.

However, LSU still has weaknesses that A&M can exploit. The aforementioned offensive inconsistencies could work in the Aggies’ favor, especially if they can take an early lead and force the Tigers to press.

A&M’s defense will be the toughest that LSU has faced so far, although Durham may be the best running back they’ve encountered, depending on your view of Ja’Quinden Jackson. If they can contain this aspect of the Tigers’ offense, it will create even more challenges for LSU.

I’m also not completely sold on the recent defensive improvement from LSU. Their impressive performance against Ole Miss seemed more about the Rebels’ struggles than anything the Tigers did, and they benefited from facing a weakened Arkansas offense.

I anticipate that LSU will take a similar approach against A&M’s Conner Weigman as Missouri and Notre Dame did: employing tight press coverage and stacking the box. If A&M can effectively counter this with precise passing early on, it could lead to significant trouble for LSU.

Another factor to consider is that this is LSU’s second consecutive night game on the road, a situation where teams often don’t perform at their best. The challenging environment at Kyle Field will only add to this difficulty.

I predict that the Aggies will pull away in the latter stages of the game. In fact, I foresee a flow reminiscent of when the Bayou Bengals last visited Kyle Field—tied at halftime before A&M accelerates in the second half. I expect a score of A&M 38, LSU 24.
