Seton Hall pledges to rebound from tight losses with Wagner next
Seton Hall coach Shaheen Holloway is confident that his team will get back on track after a challenging start to the season. Following two narrow one-point losses, the Pirates are looking to gain momentum before conference play begins when they face Wagner on Saturday afternoon in South Orange, N.J.
Holloway observed Seton Hall (1-2) lose 57-56 at home to Fordham last Saturday and then fall again in a nail-biter, 49-48, to Hofstra on Wednesday. In the latest defeat, Chaunce Jenkins scored 18 points, while Dylan Addae-Wusu contributed 11 points and eight rebounds, but the Pirates were unable to score in the last 50 seconds of the game.
Despite the setbacks, Holloway urges fans not to panic, assuring them that better days are ahead for the team.
“We had two tough games. Fordham is a solid Atlantic 10 opponent, and Hofstra is also a quality team,” he noted. “Should we have lost these games? I don’t think so. But these early challenges are crucial for our development and future success.
“To our fans, I just want to say that step by step, we’ll figure it out.”
The Seahawks (1-2) could present a challenge for Seton Hall, having recently faced No. 22 St. John’s closely until suffering a 66-45 defeat, marked by a late-game collapse during a 26-3 run by St. John’s. Javier Ezquerra was Wagner’s only player to score in double figures against the Red Storm, finishing with 10 points.
With another Big East matchup on the horizon, Wagner coach Donald Copeland, a former Seton Hall guard (2002-06), emphasizes the need for his team to concentrate on its own performance rather than focusing on the Pirates.
“The games will be what they are,” Copeland said regarding the upcoming matchups with St. John’s and Seton Hall after his team’s recent 94-52 victory over Manor College. “We need to pay more attention to our own game than to what our opponents are doing.”
