NC State University is set to receive $ 19 million in federal funding to enhance research in semiconductor electronics. This investment will support four new initiatives under the Commercial Leap Ahead for Wide Bandgap Semiconductors (CLAWS) Microelectronics Hub, as reported by CBS 17.
These projects were selected from more than 100 proposals and aim to advance the performance of transistors and switches used in both civilian and military applications. The goal is to enhance America’s economic competitiveness and national security while paving the way for commercialization.
The CLAWS Hub is one of eight established by the Biden Administration’s Chips and Science Act, which aims to boost the production and manufacturing of advanced chips in the U.S.
“Wide bandgap semiconductors have been pioneered right here in North Carolina, with companies like Wolfspeed and Kyma Technologies leading the way. This strong foundation sets us up to develop innovative technologies,” said John Muth, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State.
“The work being done at NC State on wide bandgap semiconductors is crucial for advanced radar and power electronics. Both our military and our clean energy future depend on these technologies, and this region has an impressive history in this field…we are looking towards the next generation,” added Arati Prabhakar, White House Science and Technology Director.
