“Top News” EWU Wide Receiver Sensation Looking To Cement Legacy, Compete For Walter Payton Award

Chism is a preseason first team All-American and hopes to help return EWU football to national prominence.

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington senior wide receiver Efton Chism III has had a remarkable preseason, earning a spot on the preseason first-team All-American list, the first-team All-Big Sky team, and the Walter Payton Award watchlist.

Chism, standing 5-foot-11, has amassed an impressive collection of preseason accolades. His path to prominence at EWU began in high school at Monroe, where he aspired to follow in the footsteps of his uncle, former Eagle Derek Strey.

“With my uncle coming here, it might sound crazy, but my dream was always to play for Eastern,” Chism said. “I don’t regret choosing this school. I’m glad I stayed here and didn’t go to a bigger program because I get to prove them wrong. I love it here.”

Chism uses his underdog status and being overlooked by major programs as motivation, believing it gives him an advantage on the field.

“I approach each play as if it’s my last because you never know when football might end,” Chism explained. “I try not to take any practice, play, or game for granted. I give it my all every snap, whether it’s a walkthrough or a full practice. I’d rather be slowed down than to have to speed up.”

EWU head coach Aaron Best praised Chism’s work ethic and consistency.

“His work ethic, dedication, and consistent high-level performance are exceptional,” Best said. “He practices with the intensity of a professional and carries himself off the field in the same manner. It’s impressive to watch.”

“Chism has seen many great players and emulates their qualities,” Best continued. “He’s pursuing greatness with a serious commitment.”

Chism has become a significant leader for the EWU offense, now growing more vocal in his leadership role.

“I’m not naturally talkative, so when I do speak, I hope it carries weight because I work hard and handle the small details,” Chism said. “If I speak up, I want it to make a difference and motivate the team.”

As he heads into his final college season, Chism’s primary focus is on winning games and restoring Eastern Washington’s national prominence.

“Having new players doesn’t guarantee success. We need to focus on the details—making precise route runs, correct reads, and effective blocking,” Chism said. “These small elements are crucial for winning games and overcoming challenges.”

This year’s team also features key players like Chism, standout wide receiver Nolan Ulm, running back Tuna Altahir, and last year’s top passer in the Big Sky, quarterback Kekoa Visperas.

“We have talent,” Chism noted. “We know our strengths, but it’s the attention to detail that will give us the edge and help us dominate and win.”

Regarding the preseason honors and Walter Payton Award discussions, Chism is motivated by the recognition but remains focused on performance.

“It feels great to receive these honors, but now it’s about proving it on the field,” Chism said. “Seeing the four Walter Payton statues and the names on the wall every day at our facility reminds me of what’s possible and keeps me motivated.”

Chism will begin his pursuit of Eastern Washington greatness on Thursday, August 29, at home against Monmouth, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
