Gonzaga has decided on a coach to succeed Mark Few

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have officially established a succession plan for head coach Mark Few’s eventual retirement.

During an appearance on the “College Hoops Today” podcast with Jon Rothstein, Few revealed that assistant coach Brian Michaelson is set to take over when he steps down. Few emphasized he has no plans to retire in the near future but wanted to ensure there’s a plan for when that time comes.

“Brian Michaelson will be the one to succeed me,” Few stated. “That’s one of the strengths of Gonzaga; we always have the next person ready to step up.”

Michaelson, a player under Few from 2001 to 2005, joined Gonzaga’s coaching staff in 2008 as an administrative assistant and became an assistant coach in 2013 at the age of 42.

As Few pointed out, Gonzaga prioritizes continuity in its program. Few himself was hired as an assistant in 1999 following Dan Monson’s departure, who had previously been an assistant at the school before his promotion. Former top assistant Tommy Lloyd was also named as Few’s successor before taking the head coach position at Arizona in 2021.
