The Boston Red Sox appear to be gearing up for a major offseason push.
After falling short of expectations during last year’s “full throttle” offseason, the team’s front office has refocused on adding high-impact players with the goal of returning to playoff contention.
According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, there’s a strong sense at the GM Meetings that the Red Sox are positioned to make bold moves this winter, with a key trade target emerging: a White Sox left-handed pitcher. The southpaw, who made his All-Star debut this season, struck out 209 batters in his first year as a starter. Given that his current team is in the midst of a rebuild, he’s expected to be on the trading block.
To acquire him, FanSided’s Cody Williams suggested a blockbuster deal involving several Red Sox prospects: outfielder Wilyer Abreu, pitcher Kutter Crawford, and two other minor leaguers, in exchange for the ace. Williams highlighted Abreu and Crawford as the primary trade pieces, noting that Crawford, at 28, could immediately slot into Chicago’s rotation after a solid season in Boston, while Abreu’s potential could be key to getting the deal done.
While this trade would involve parting with two promising contributors, it would allow the Red Sox to keep their top four prospects—Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, and Kyle Teel—intact. This would give the front office the chance to acquire an immediate upgrade for the pitching staff without sacrificing the team’s future star power.
If executed, the deal would provide the Red Sox with a much-needed ace to anchor their rotation, addressing a long-standing gap, especially with Chris Sale’s injury history. Williams added that this move, combined with further spending and potential trades, could set Boston up for a successful push while helping the White Sox continue their rebuild.
