Kansas Football Players Volunteer at Youth Football Camp in Lawrence
Lawrence, Kansas – On a bright Friday morning, twelve Kansas football players gathered at Lawrence Free State High School with a shared purpose: to volunteer at a youth football camp organized by The Raw Power Team (TRPT) in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence. The camp catered to children ranging from kindergarten to seventh grade, drawing in approximately a hundred enthusiastic young athletes.
Representing nearly every position group, these KU players, despite varying hometowns, united in their eagerness to contribute to their local community in Lawrence. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and mentorship, as they interacted closely with the children throughout the event.
Cornerback Cobee Bryant, reflecting on the experience, shared his delight in seeing the kids genuinely enjoying themselves: “Just to see kids having fun, really liking football, and it’s just nice to meet them. I see a lot of kids saying they were happy to meet me. So I kinda feel amazed, just really blessed to be out here with the kids.”
For many of the players, participating in the camp evoked nostalgic memories of their own childhoods spent attending similar events. Daniel Hishaw Jr., touched by the opportunity to connect with the young participants, remarked, “Just kinda giving me memories of when I was a little kid doing these camps, and the older guys they looked so big to me. And now that I’m that big, I don’t even feel big, but it’s just really cool being able to talk to them, and just be with them while they’re enjoying football.”
Beyond the personal connections forged, the players also noted the palpable excitement buzzing through the community as the 2024 football season approached. Hishaw expressed the team’s commitment to revitalizing the local football spirit, stating, “That’s what we came here to do. We came here to make Lawrence a great place, make it feel like we can be excited about football again. And we’re finally doing it.”
Bryant echoed this sentiment, observing the growing anticipation among fans and young athletes alike: “It’s building a lot of attention. And seeing how the season’s gonna go, and just seeing the kids, they really love like.. everybody’s really into Kansas football this year. That’s all I’ve been hearing, seeing, everybody’s really ready to see us play this year. So it should be fun to watch.”
The outreach efforts of these KU players extend beyond the football field, illustrating their dedication to fostering a positive impact within their community.
