Two suspects arrested after shooting near Tennessee State homecoming left 1 dead, 9 injured

Two suspects were arrested on Monday following a shooting near Tennessee State University that resulted in one death and multiple injuries on Saturday.

Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown, both 24, were apprehended at a short-term rental in Nashville and face charges of criminal homicide, as reported by the Metro Nashville Police Department.

The men are believed to have played a role in the shooting that occurred near the university, which resulted in the death of Vonquae Johnson, a 24-year-old who was also thought to have been involved. Nine individuals were hospitalized, including two other suspected shooters.

Police indicate that five people were involved in the gunfire exchange.

“The shooters showed a complete disregard for human life, endangering a crowd of innocent people, including children,” stated Police Chief John Drake. “The entire criminal justice system must address violent gun crime with the seriousness it warrants, resulting in imprisonment for those found guilty.”

What Happened?
On Saturday, following the university’s homecoming festivities, gunfire erupted between two opposing groups around 5:10 p.m., shortly after the homecoming parade concluded.

“We’ve identified shell casings indicating shots were fired from both sides of the street,” said police spokesperson Don Aaron. “While the earlier crowd had begun to disperse, the parking lots remained crowded.”

Five Suspected Shooters
Police believe five individuals were involved in the shooting. One suspect, Johnson, was killed, while two others were injured and taken to the hospital but refused to speak to authorities there, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

Davis, one of the two men arrested on Monday, had a prior criminal record that included convictions for robbery, felony gun possession, and felony drug possession in April. He was serving a 10-year probation under the Community Corrections Program and was found in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest.

Who Were the Victims?
Among the nine people hospitalized, three were minors: a 12-year-old girl and two 14-year-old girls, all of whom sustained “non-critical” injuries during the incident.

Police stated on Monday that none of the victims suffered critical injuries.
