UNC Basketball Makes Brutally Crafty But Detailed Statement on 2025 Recruiting Trail
The UNC basketball recruiters struck pay dirt for a surging senior sharpshooter.
The 2025 recruiting class for UNC basketball has officially received its first commitment, as senior guard Derek Dixon from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. announced on Friday afternoon that he will be joining Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels.
Dixon, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound skilled playmaker and renowned three-point shooter, selected UNC over other contenders like Pitt, Virginia, and Vanderbilt. He made his decision shortly after visiting Chapel Hill for an official visit, the final trip in his recruitment as a top-tier four-star prospect.
“I want to win, and that’s what Carolina represents,” Dixon told 247Sports’ Dushawn London.
He is currently ranked No. 47 overall in the 247Sports 2025 Composite, having risen 41 spots since his initial ranking in June 2023 and climbing 14 spots since the start of the summer. Known for his tenacious perimeter defense, Dixon is ranked No. 6 among 2025 combo guards and No. 3 in Washington, D.C.
“This is the kind of player who can make a significant impact on a program for several years and achieve a lot of success,” remarked 247Sports director of basketball scouting Adam Finkelstein after Dixon’s announcement.
