Virginia Tech Football’s Coup: Securing the Ultimate RB Prospect

Virginia Tech enjoyed a stellar week capped off by a significant development on Friday, as highly sought-after in-state running back Jeff Overton announced his commitment to the Hokies. Overton was Virginia Tech’s primary target at the running back position and marked the sixth commitment in just eight days for the Hokies.

Standing at 5-foot-10.5 and weighing 192 pounds, Overton hails from Hayfield Secondary School in Alexandria, VA. He is ranked as the 22nd best player in Virginia for the class of 2025 according to 247Sports. Overton initially attended Freedom High in Woodbridge before transferring to Hayfield to play under his uncle, who serves as the head coach.

Overton’s commitment bolsters Virginia Tech’s 2025 recruiting class, making him the 12th player to pledge to the program. His decision came after deliberating between offers from South Carolina and Maryland, ultimately selecting Virginia Tech in a recruiting triumph for head coach Brent Pry.

What makes Overton such a prized addition for the Hokies?

From his freshman year onwards, Overton showcased his talent by rushing for 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns. His sophomore campaign continued to impress, but it was his outstanding performance in 2023 for Freedom High that truly highlighted his capabilities. During that season, Overton amassed staggering statistics, totaling 2,713 rushing yards, 41 touchdowns, and averaging an impressive 13 yards per carry. His exceptional contributions earned him Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year Award, leading his team to an undefeated 14-0 record and clinching the Class 6 state championship for the second consecutive year.

Despite his on-field accomplishments, it’s surprising that Overton isn’t more highly rated by recruiting services. His highlight reel demonstrates exceptional skill and effectiveness against formidable opponents.

Virginia Tech’s successful recruitment of Overton underscores their improved efforts in Northern Virginia, where he becomes the fifth commitment from the region in this recruiting cycle.
